Long have we offered you the Outlander series: new or used. As they arrive, bright and shinyOutlander colouring book in hard cover or paperback, or worn and pre-loved in gently used copies. We’ve even been so lucky as to bring in a FIRST EDITION hard cover. Yup. It was worth many pretty pennies and worth every cent.

Happily we have more affordable and several wonderful options for Outlander collectors and fans. Sharpen your pencil crayons and be ready to colour to your heart’s content: brand new from Penguin Random House we have The Official Outlander Coloring Book (though it pains me to use the US spelling: it’s colouring).

Outlandish Companion vol 2From the lush green of the Scottish Highlands to the military red of a British soldier’s coat or the vibrant hues of a tartan kilt, the colorful world of Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser is now yours to explore and colour. Featuring natural landscapes, detailed drawings of Claire’s medicinal herbs, depictions of the books’ most beloved scenes and characters, and intricately rendered clothing, weapons, and armor straight out of eighteenth-century Scotland, these exquisite black-and-white images—from renowned illustrators Juan Alarcón, Yvonne Gilbert, Craig Phillips, Jon Proctor, Tomislav Tomić, and Rebecca Zomchek—are designed to dazzle and inspire.

Our second brand new offering from Penguin Random House is The Outlandish Companion Volume Two. Featuring all new material and exclusive behind-the-scenes insights into the world of Outlander, this comprehensive, fully illustrated guide covers volumes 4-8 of the Outlander Vol2series and will be a must-have for long-time fans of the bestselling series, new readers, and viewers of the Outlander series on Showcase.

Finally, we have the perfect companion for these books:  enjoy Outlander, Vol. 2  of the Original Television Soundtrack. On Compact Disc; yup, CD. Now, I know we normally stock vinyl, but I’ve make an exception for Outlander fans. I was told I MUST bring in this soundtrack. On CD. So, here it is.

Enjoy a taste with the Skye Boat song:

Station Eleven – One Book One Community

Station ElevenThis book is a rare treat. It’s a book both Greg and I enjoyed and even pick up to re-read passages or jointly reminisce about scenes. It’s a book about the end of the world that is both hopeful for humanity and yet realistic.  We enjoyed it so much that we have many copies in store.

We’re not the only book lovers who love this book: it’s been chosen as the One Book One Community title for Waterloo Region.

Lots more love is directed toward this book. Here is a list of awards and, below, a summary of the novel. Enjoy!

Summary

An audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization’s collapse, Station Eleven tells the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

One snowy night Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack onstage during a production of King Lear. Jeevan Chaudhary, a paparazzo-turned-EMT, is in the audience and leaps to his aid. A child actress named Kirsten Raymonde watches in horror as Jeevan performs CPR, pumping Arthur’s chest as the curtain drops, but Arthur is dead. That same night, as Jeevan walks home from the theater, a terrible flu begins to spread. Hospitals are flooded and Jeevan and his brother barricade themselves inside an apartment, watching out the window as cars clog the highways, gunshots ring out, and life disintegrates around them.

Fifteen years later, Kirsten is an actress with the Traveling Symphony. Together, this small troupe moves between the settlements of an altered world, performing Shakespeare and music for scattered communities of survivors. Written on their caravan, and tattooed on Kirsten’s arm is a line from Star Trek: “Because survival is insufficient.” But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who digs graves for anyone who dares to leave.

Spanning decades, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, this suspenseful, elegiac novel is rife with beauty. As Arthur falls in and out of love, as Jeevan watches the newscasters say their final good-byes, and as Kirsten finds herself caught in the crosshairs of the prophet, we see the strange twists of fate that connect them all. A novel of art, memory, and ambition, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.

Kelley Armstrong’s newest book

We’re big fans of Kelley Armstrong here at MillpondRB. Some of you may remember when she visited us when she launched her first book in the Cainsville series, Omens. This was also around the same time that the television series, Bitten, was being filmed here.

Now, I’m pleased to say, that we have Kelley’s third book in this increasingly well-loved series. Just released this week, the newest book is Deceptions.

Deceptions K.Armstrong at MillpondRBIn the exciting new novel in bestselling author Kelley Armstrong’s compelling Cainsville series, Olivia realizes that she is at the heart of a tug-of-war between ancient forces—and that everyone around her risks becoming collateral damage.

When Olivia’s life exploded—after she found out she was not the only child of a privileged Chicago family, but of a notorious pair of serial killers—she found a refuge in the oddly secluded but welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois. Working with Gabriel Walsh, a precociously successful criminal lawyer with links to the town, she managed to partially clear her parents’ name in an investigation that also revealed darker forces at work in the town that had offered her a haven.

Fleeing Cainsville after she is almost killed, Olivia finds herself not only the target of the Cainsville elders and of the Huntsmen, but also of her ex-fiancé, James, who stalks her and even tries to have her kidnapped. All this as her feelings for Ricky deepen, and confusingly her feelings for Gabriel too. Visions continue to haunt her: particularly a little blond girl in a green sundress who insists she has an important message for Olivia, and holds out in her palm a black stone and a white stone that swirl together to create a balance of light and dark. Death stalks them all, as Olivia desperately searches to understand whether ancient scripts are dictating the triangle that links her to Gabriel and Ricky, or whether she has the power to change the tragic outcome.

Kelley Armstrong’s books are available MillpondRB in NEW or gently USED condition. Kelley Armstrong books at MillpondRB

The Wereduck has arrived

Wereduck. You heard me. WereDUCK.

Wereduck. You heard me. WereDUCK.

Once upon a time, an author came up with a novel idea. In this case, he kind of shook up the stale world of werewolves and brought in a quacky, new character. Kate, the … wereduck!

Kate’s family has told her that on her thirteenth birthday she’ll hear the “Whooooo” call of the moon, and howl back, and become a werewolf just like them. But she doesn’t want to be a werewolf. She’s always felt more like a duck. On the night of her thirteenth birthday, Kate stands near her family’s cabin in the backwoods of New Brunswick and hears the moon calling-but it sounds like more of a “Whooooo?” as in “Who are you?” and Kate does what she’s always wanted to do-she quacks. Quack, quack, quacks.

Her family tries to understand Kate’s new full-moon form, but they are busy integrating themselves with some new, edgy werewolves in town.

Engaging, hilarious, and utterly believable, Wereduck is a thrilling addition to the were-canon.

Learn more about Kate by reading Dave Atkinson’s Wereduck. Fun for all ages but written specifically for the middle grades.

Dave Atkinson is an award-winning freelance journalist, columnist, and broadcaster. His work for the CBC has appeared on The Current, The Sunday Edition, Tapestry, Maritime Magazine, In the Field, and regional radio programs across the country. He and his wife are homeschooling their three silly kids in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Read stories and comics about their adventures at www.tomatotransplants.com

One more thing, here’s a smack-down retort from a debate with the author earlier this year. Enjoy!
